Wild Plants Workshop with Janice Schofield June 16-18, 2017
This Janice is the author of “Discovering Wild Plants: Alaska, Western Canada, the Northwest” and “Alaska’s Wild Plants: A guide to Alaska’s Edible Harvest”
This workshop will be a hands-on exploration of useful wild plants native to Interior Alaska. As well as classroom time, we will go on field trips to different habitats for identifying and collecting plants, and spend afternoons in the kitchen learning preparation techniques for medicinal and culinary uses.
The workshop will be held at Kenny Lake Community Hall, Mile 7.5 Edgerton Highway. The location is approximately 90 miles north of Valdez, 220 miles East from Anchorage, 300 miles South of Fairbanks. Campgrounds, cabins, bed and breakfasts, gas station and stores are located nearby.
Friday 6pm to 9pm: powerpoint show- Wise Traditions and Wild Plants introductory exercises; preparation for field trips. Saturday 9:30am-12:30pm: field trip; identification; harvesting 12:30-1 lunch; 1pm-4:30pm hands on preparation of edible and medicinal plants. Medicinal plant preparations to include teas, tinctures, salves, oxymels, etc. Sunday 10am-12:30pm field trip to other habitats; identification; harvesting; 12:30-1pm lunch; 1pm-3pm wild food cooking and medicinal plant preparations ; 3pm-4:30pm Wild food potluck and show and tell; final questions and cleanup.
Tuition and lab fee is $200 per person, spaces can be reserved with a $50 deposit due by May 1, 2017. Class is filling quickly and we will take applicants in the order they are received, so please don't delay if you want a place.
